Waylon Russell Brewer is a chubby, open gay guy stuck in the small town of Clover City in West Texas. His plan is to wait until he finishes school, move to Austin with his twin sister Clementine, and finally live his life.
So when Clementine veers off their master plan right after Waylon gets dumped, he throws caution to the wind and creates an audition tape for his favorite drag TV show, The Fiercest of Them All. What he doesn't expect is for the tape to accidentally get shared all over school... as a result, Waylon is jokingly nominated for prom queen. Clementine's girlfriend, Hannah Perez, also gets a joking nomination for prom king.
Waylon and Hannah decide they only have one thing left to do: run away—and make a grand exit from school. Enter: fabulous bangs. Along the way, Waylon discovers that running for prom king and queen is a lot more than just campaign posters and plastic crowns, especially when he has to spend so much time with the very cute and very annoying prom king candidate, Tucker Watson.
